First-Time Exotic Car Rental: Everything You Need to Know

May 1, 2026|Superior Motor Club

Renting an exotic car for the first time is exciting, and it can also feel a little intimidating. How does the process work? What do you need to bring? Will you be able to handle a car with 600 horsepower? These are all valid questions, and the good news is that the experience is far more accessible than most people think.

At Superior Motor Club, we have helped hundreds of first-time renters through the process, and this guide covers everything you need to know to make your first exotic car rental smooth, enjoyable, and unforgettable.

Before You Book: Requirements

Age and License

You must be at least 21 years old to rent an exotic car from Superior Motor Club. Renters between 21 and 24 may be subject to a young driver surcharge. You will need a valid, unrestricted driver's license — no learner's permits or temporary licenses.

If you hold a foreign driver's license, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your home country license. Contact us before booking to confirm.

Insurance

This is the requirement that trips up first-time renters more than any other, so pay close attention. You need valid auto insurance that covers exotic and luxury vehicles. Many standard personal auto policies do cover rental vehicles, but some policies exclude vehicles above a certain value, and most exotic cars fall above that threshold.

Call your insurance provider before your rental and ask specifically whether your policy covers a rental vehicle valued at over $200,000 with comprehensive and collision coverage. Get this confirmation in writing if possible.

If your personal insurance does not cover exotic rentals, we offer supplemental coverage options that you can purchase at the time of booking. This ensures you are fully protected and can enjoy your rental with complete peace of mind.

Deposit

A security deposit hold will be placed on your credit card at the time of booking. The deposit amount varies by vehicle, typically ranging from $2,500 to $15,000. This is a hold, not a charge — it will be released within 5 to 10 business days after you return the vehicle in its original condition.

You must use a credit card in your name for the deposit. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and third-party credit cards are not accepted.

Choosing Your First Exotic Car

For first-time renters, we typically recommend starting with a vehicle that balances thrilling performance with approachable handling. Here are our top recommendations:

Best for First-Timers: Porsche 911 Carrera S

The 911 is the most natural, intuitive supercar on the market. Despite its 443 horsepower, the 911 is remarkably easy to drive, with smooth power delivery, excellent visibility, and a chassis that inspires confidence from the first corner. It is also the most practical exotic car you can rent, with a small rear seat and a front trunk for luggage.

At $600 per day, the 911 is also the most affordable way to enter the exotic car world. If you have never driven a high-performance vehicle before, start here.

Best for Maximum Impact: Lamborghini Urus SE

If you want the exotic car experience without the low-slung driving position and limited visibility of a supercar, the Urus SE is the answer. It drives like a luxury SUV but delivers supercar acceleration with 789 horsepower and all-wheel drive. The elevated seating position feels familiar and comfortable, and the all-wheel drive system provides an extra layer of confidence.

Ready for More: Ferrari 458 Italia

If you are an experienced driver with some track or performance driving experience, the Ferrari 458 Italia delivers a raw, unfiltered supercar experience. This is not the car for a timid first-timer, but it is the car for someone who wants to feel what a true mid-engine supercar is all about.

The Day of Your Rental

Vehicle Walkthrough

When you pick up the vehicle or we deliver it to you, our team will conduct a thorough walkthrough. We will review the vehicle's current condition together, documenting any existing marks or imperfections with photographs. We will also explain the key controls, including the start procedure, drive modes, suspension settings, and any unique features.

Do not feel rushed during this process. Ask questions about anything you are unsure of. Our team genuinely wants you to feel confident and comfortable before you drive away.

Driving Tips

Your palms are sweating. The key fob weighs more than your apartment key and feels like it costs more than your apartment. You press the start button and the V8 rumbles to life — it is louder than you expected, and for a second you wonder if you can actually do this. The car vibrates through the seat, through the steering wheel, through your chest. Then you ease out of the parking spot, feathering the throttle like it might bite you, and by the time you hit the first straightaway on the West Side Highway, you are grinning like a kid on Christmas morning. That is the arc of every first-time rental, and it is completely normal.

Start slow. Spend the first thirty minutes getting comfortable with the car's dimensions, throttle response, and braking power. The brakes on exotic cars — usually carbon ceramic — feel strange at first. They do not grab when cold the way your Honda's brakes do. Press a little harder. They warm up, and then they stop the car with a violence that will pin your seatbelt against your chest. Respect them. They are better than you think.

Use the drive modes. Every exotic car has multiple settings ranging from a gentle daily mode to a full-attack sport mode that sharpens the throttle, stiffens the suspension, and opens the exhaust valves. Start in comfort mode. Get a feel for the car's personality. Then, when you hit an empty stretch of the Palisades Interstate Parkway and the road opens up ahead of you, click into sport mode and feel the car transform under you. The same car, completely different animal.

Be aware of the car's width. Supercars and luxury SUVs are significantly wider than a normal sedan, and the side mirrors on a Lamborghini or Ferrari sit close to the body. Manhattan parking garages, SoHo side streets, and the tight turns inside Central Park all demand extra attention. Take your time. There is no shame in going slow — the car looks incredible at any speed.

Watch the ground clearance. Many supercars sit lower than the curb height in Manhattan. Approach speed bumps, driveway transitions, and the steel plates on construction zones at a slow angle. Most modern supercars have a nose lift feature that raises the front suspension at the push of a button — ask our team to show you how to activate it before you drive away.

Getting the Most from Your Experience

Plan a route. Do not just drive aimlessly around the city in traffic — you will spend more time at red lights than enjoying the car. Instead, plan a route that includes some open road. The West Side Highway, the Palisades Interstate Parkway, and Route 9A along the Hudson River are all excellent choices within easy reach of Manhattan.

Bring a passenger. The experience is more fun when you can share it with someone. Plus, they can navigate and handle the phone so you can focus on driving.

Time it right. Early mornings on weekends offer the best combination of light traffic and beautiful light for photos. A Saturday morning departure at 7 AM gives you clear roads and golden hour photography before the rest of the city wakes up.

Take photos and video. We encourage you to document your experience. Pull over at scenic spots, capture the car from different angles, and record some driving footage from the passenger seat. These are memories worth preserving.

After Your Rental

Return the vehicle at the agreed-upon time and location with the same fuel level as at pickup. Our team will conduct a post-rental inspection with you present. Assuming everything checks out, your deposit hold will be released within 5 to 10 business days.

Most importantly, enjoy the afterglow. You have just driven one of the most extraordinary machines ever built. That first exotic car rental is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life — and it usually is not the last.
